salal Salal: A creeping to erect or partially climbing shrub with hairy, 0.1-1.2 m long stems. The leaves are persistent, shiny, leathery, and sharply toothed. They are oval to elliptical in shape, 5-9 cm long, and 3-5 cm broad. The bell shaped, pinkish, 7-10 mm long flowers are clustered together in groups of 5-15 at the end of the stems. The purplish fruit is 6-10 mm broad and is edible. The plants flower from May to July and are native to British Columbia.
